Shooting

Shooting

There are many ways to teach shooting, but the simplest way I have found is to break it into three fundamental pieces: stance, rhythm, and release.

Cone Hop Overs are specifically intended to help you with the rhythm of your shot. Here's what you should focus on:
  1. Start in your shooting stance, with the ball between your belly button and chest.
  2. Stay low as you hop over the cones and land exactly in that stance.
  3. As soon as your feet hit the ground, move your legs and the ball together at the same time in order to generate the most power.
  4. Jump almost as high as you can and finish off your shot with a perfect release.

The Two Minute Drill is a great way to test, and retest over time, your shooting percentage and ability to shoot under pressure.

The drill is simple:
  1. Start at 2:00 timer on your first shot.
  2. You must make 2 shots in a row from the five different spots on the floor: baseline, wing, top, opposite wing, opposite baseline.
  3. Once you've done that, with the remaining time in 2:00 make as many free throws as you can. This is your score.
  4. If you don't make it to the free throw line, your score is 0. Middle Schoolers should aim for a score of 7 - 12. High Schoolers should aim for a score of 13 - 20. College and pro should aim for 20+.

Star Shooting is a "green light" shooting drill invented by Mike Neighbors, the current head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. All of his shooters need to meet certain score requirements in order to shoot on the court. Would you get the green light?

How it works:
  1. Start a clock on your first shot (from the baseline). Sprint to the opposite wing, then to the other wing, then to the opposite baseline, and finally to the top. Head back to where you started and repeat those 5 shots for a total of 10.
  2. On your last shot, stop the timer. Take your total time and subtract 3 seconds for every make (15ft), and 4 seconds for every make if shooting from the 3pt.
