Can't Hurt Me by David Goggins
|
I'm a big time fan girl of the U.S. Navy SEALS, and this book is one of many I've read from someone from their exclusive brotherhood. I won't begin to imagine the type of toughness it takes to be able to earn the right to wear the uniform, but at least we can all live vicariously and implement the lessons learned from these exceptional individuals, albeit on a much more mellow playing field.
Picking only four of Mr. Goggins' quotes was a very difficult task. On top of his gold nugget quotes, he has various challenges for the reader laced throughout his book. He goes even a mile further, in typical Goggins fashion, by holding off the cuff interviews with the book narrator. If you're not inspired to push your own perceived limits after reading this, no one can help you.

The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday
|
For about two years now, I have been a loyal subscriber to Ryan Holiday's monthly recommended book list - which if you're not on you should be. I aspire to read as much as he does in a month, it's seriously impressive. He is a master researcher of the stoics and his work is reflective of their way of seeing and experiencing the world.
This is without question a book I could read over and over again. Life is an endless obstacle course, and the value of what's expressed in this book is prevalent, relatable, and timeless. For you, I have no doubt that you will find tremendous value in this book. Here are some of my favorite quotes out of the countless highlighted text that there was to chose from.

Legacy by James Kerr
|
Legacy: 15 Lessons in Leadership is about winning, period. Even if you don't like sports, or have an athletics background, this is a great book about how to be successful as individuals and in the work environment.
However, if you are an athlete or apart of a team environment now, this is a must read. Kerr dives into the legendary All Blacks rugby team, who are the winningest sports organization in the last 100 years, and shares over a dozen powerful lessons in leadership that originate from their legacy.

Chasing Excellence by Ben Bergeron
|
What first got me on to listening to the recorded thoughts of Ben Bergeron was his podcast, Chasing Excellence. It became clear to me that this is a man who lives and breathes what he talks about in the podcast every single day.
Ben Bergeron is an excellence creator and curator. As a coach and recreational athlete trying to live, learn, and grow everyday, this book is an awesome motivator. The book is much like the podcast in the sense that it will grab you from the beginning with thought provoking concepts and stories of self-improvement.

I love the way this book starts...
"I'm barely running at all, I'm doing 2-3 miles every other day... 'The human body is not designed for that kind of abuse, especially not your body', the doctor said. At 6'4" and 230lbs, I'd been told many times that nature intended guys my size to post up under the hoop or take a bullet for the president, not pound our bulk down the pavement."
As a former professional basketball player, that statement definitely rings true for me and I've always been fascinated with former teammates who go on to fall in love with running. Admire them and attempt as much as I may, I just can't seem to fall in step (pun intended) and stick to running.
If you're in the same boat of wondering why running seems so effortless for some (the Tarahumara for example, who McDougall finds and follows in the heart of Mexico) and impossible for others, this is a great read!

The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek
Having played finite games my entire life - games that have a score, a winner and a loser at the end - it has been an interesting transition into the world of business where so much of doing good work is about having a infinite mindset, and not a finite one. In business, if you are doing good while making money (notice the order of operations there), you are playing an infinite game where you are working to create change that lasts long after your gone. Meanwhile, a finite mindset in the business world is one where you only care about the short term outcome, who wins or loses, who has more money, etc.
This book, by award winning author and Ted Talk speaker extraordinaire, Simon Sinek, is for readers who are intrigued by building stronger, more inspiring businesses who do good work for the benefit of others before the benefit of themselves.

Mindset by Carol S. Dweck
Did you that Einstein and Tolstoy were considered ordinary children? This book delves into unlocking our potential instead of falling victim to the "fixed" way of thinking that we are who we were born to be, rather, we are who we decide to be.
Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson
Preface: I am not an NBA fan; therefore, not a Lakers fan. However, I respect and appreciate the intense commitment and demand that basketball at this level requires of a person, whether they be the one scoring the baskets, organizing the X's and O's, negotiating contracts, or cleaning the jerseys.
Phil Jackson is one of the greatest coaches the game has seen. He played 12 seasons in the NBA, before moving on to coach Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, Gary Payton, and Karl Malone, among many others. Interestingly, he is known, albeit not to me yet (having just started the book), by his holistic approach to coaching, having earned him the nickname "Zen Master". This, on top of the fact that he has amassed 11 NBA titles as a head coach, makes this a nightstand book for March.

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Making sense of life and the world we live in is no easy task, especially when we are searching for answers to timeless questions.
- What is our purpose?
- Why does there have to be suffering, and is it good?
- What do difficult times teach us?
- How can we get through difficult times?
- Why do things happen to us?
Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday
It's everybody's dream to be successful whether we know it or not. As kids we do our best to please our parents (most of the time), and when we fail it is heart wrenching. As we get older, that desire to fit in, be liked, and, ultimately, be successful in whatever way we see that being doesn't go away. In fact it gets more complex and intense.
In Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday explains how our ego can actually inhibit us from reaching our goals and aspirations and what we can do to get over ourselves. Intriguing accounts from people like Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, and Bill Belichick, who all attained some level of success in their life, opens up an avenue for you and I to conquer our egos and seize our dreams.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Arguably all of us are searching for fulfillment in our lives in some way. Whether it is through accomplishments, relationships, monetary worth, you name it. But, with all those extraneous thoughts focused on the future, how can we truly enjoy each and every moment that we live? Well, Eckhart Tolle proposes in The Power of Now that the only way to true fulfillment is by being solely invested in the present moment that is "the now".
Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell
At first glance, Talking to Strangers could seem like a book to help introverts get off their couch and into the world. In actuality, it is a book to help humanity work through their prejudgments of others and to make sense out of various degrees of human behavior.
Gladwell poses questions relating to human behavior and then provides thought provoking, scientifically backed answers that are so incredibly relevant right now that this is a book you can't not read.
