There is a parable of two young fish, that author Mel Robbins addresses in her book The 5 Second Rule. It goes like this:
Two young fish were swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What the hell is water?” The point of this parable, is that the most obvious and important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. I myself, nor Robbins, can take credit for the eloquent elaboration of this, that credit goes to now passed author David Foster Wallace. He used this parable to address a graduating class from Kenyon College in 2005, where he dove deeper into the parable by saying: "The capital-T Truth is about life before death. It is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over: this is water." I think that is an amazing reminder to us to be conscious, and to embrace each and every day. We should avoid simply swimming through the water unconsciously, but to embrace the things that are hard, see more than just your point of view, learn as much as you can, and to help and be courteous to others. After all, we all swim in this ocean together. Warm Up
